"Local moms ‘clothes the deal’ with infant couture and more" "Local moms ‘clothes the deal’ with infant couture and more"
Source: Hollywood Gazette Written by: Staff at Hollywood Gazette
Three Hollywood women are part of a growing wave of “mom-preneurs” who
are discovering that motherhood and career are not mutually exclusive
enterprises.
Caren Horvitz, stay-at-home mom to 13-month-old Gavin,
started her own hip babywear line, Onesie Upon A Time, shortly before
finding out she was pregnant. After her son was born, Horvitz found
herself juggling the demands of new motherhood and a new business.
She found that it is possible to nurture both her child and her creative spirit, thanks in part to networking with other moms.
It was at the Mommies in Motion exercise program in Hollywood that
Horvitz first met Nikki Kusens, another Hollywood mom with her own
home-based children’s clothing business, Nu Luv, which offers various
designer lines at affordable prices. One of those lines is now Onesie
Upon A Time.
Kusens started her business in January following the deaths of her
beloved grandparents, Evelyn and Gus Ash, just months apart. She was
working for a developer when her grandmother went into the hospital
with a broken hip. As Ash’s condition deteriorated, Kusens left her job
to be able to spend as much time with her grandmother as possible.
Less than a week before she died, Ash suggested that she and her
granddaughter start a vending-machine business together. It would
dispense “love and caring” and they would call it “New Love,” Kusens
recalled her grandmother saying.
And so, about five months later, she opened Nu Luv “to live out my
grandmother’s legacy,” as well as provide other moms with a much-needed
service. Kusens said she loves shopping for her 18-month-old daughter,
Charli, “but it’s so expensive.”
Kusens “made a little boutique” in her home and shows her merchandise
by appointment, at house parties, and at community and charity events.
Online shopping will be available by the end of May. One of Kusen’s top priorities in business is to “spread the joy,” and
so she congratulates new moms with a complimentary outfit and gives an
additional discount on a child’s birthday.
“We try to be generous,” Kusens said. “I’m trying to do what my grandmother would want me to do.”
For Horvitz, having a home-based business lets her be both a mom and a
creative being. Through a new partnership with marketing consultant
Gloria Mallardi, another Hollywood mother, Horvitz is expanding her
artistic endeavors to include a full line of personalized stationery.
Mallardi, the owner of glō consultants and mother of a 1-year-old son,
Journey, met Horvitz at a local Mommy & Me class and the two “felt
a connection,” she recalled.
“We both were creative souls and had other similarities,” said Horvitz.
While programs for new mothers offer the benefits of mother-child
bonding, exercise, socializing and support from fellow moms, “Never in
my wildest dreams did I expect it to be a networking opportunity,”
Horvitz said. “It’s been a great little ‘small world.’”
Not one to, as she calls it, “be left in Barney land,” Horvitz is doing
professional double duty these days, working with Mallardi on their new
stationery line while she fills special orders for Onesie Upon A Time
and prepares to introduce a new streamlined spring collection. “If you can make your craft revolve around your baby, it’s great,” she said.
Mallardi agreed that embarking on the joint venture is “even more
exciting because I can incorporate my marketing experience into
something I’m extremely passionate about, which is my child.” The new business, Wee-Words, includes baby shower invitations, birth
announcements and birthday cards – and a special message for all
stay-at-home mothers.
“We want other moms to know that if they join forces, they can set the world on fire,” said Horvitz. For more information on the new stationery line, visit
